Ad platforms use their own vocabulary for how spending and performance get measured. None of it is complicated once it's explained plainly — and you need to know it before you can set a sane budget.
The four terms you'll see everywhere
- Impression — one time your ad was shown on someone's screen. It doesn't mean they noticed it, just that it loaded.
- CPM (cost per mille) — what you pay per 1,000 impressions. If a platform's CPM is $10, showing your ad 1,000 times costs $10.
- CTR (click-through rate) — the percentage of people who saw your ad and clicked it. A 1% CTR means 1 in 100 viewers clicked.
- Conversion rate — the percentage of those clicks that turned into an actual sale, lead, or sign-up. This is the number that ultimately decides whether an ad was worth running.
Put together: your budget buys impressions, a fraction of those impressions become clicks, and a fraction of those clicks become customers. Every platform's CPM is different, which means the same budget buys very different amounts of reach depending on where you spend it.
What a realistic budget looks like
There's no universal "right" ad budget — it depends on your margins, your sales cycle, and how expensive your platform's CPM is. What matters when you're starting out is picking a number you can commit to for at least 4–6 weeks, since most ad accounts need that long to gather enough data to optimize properly. A budget that's too small to generate any clicks or conversions won't teach you anything, win or lose.
See what your budget actually buys
Platforms don't all cost the same. A platform like LinkedIn can cost 5–10x more per impression than Facebook or TikTok, because you're paying for far more precise targeting. Use the calculator below to see how far a given monthly budget goes on each platform.

Estimated results
66,667

71,429
est. impressions on Instagram
55,556
est. impressions on TikTok
Based on typical 2025–2026 benchmarks: Facebook ~$7.50 and Instagram ~$7 CPM (WebFX), TikTok ~$9 CPM (WebFX), LinkedIn ~$70 CPM for broad B2B targeting (The Smarketers, 2026), X ~$7 CPM (eMarketer/AutoTweet, 2026), and YouTube ~$0.20 per view (WebFX). YouTube is priced per view rather than per impression. Illustrative only — your actual cost depends on industry, targeting, and competition.
Planning the content side of your budget
Everything above covers paid media spend — what you pay the platform to show your ad. You'll separately need content to put in front of that spend (and, longer term, free organic posting to support it). If you want to see what producing that content might cost and how far it could reach, Sun Scroller's growth calculator estimates views, leads, and revenue from a monthly content plan using the same kind of real benchmark data used throughout this course.
